14th January 2010

Forgot what we did but we spent almost the whole afternoon waiting for the agent and repairmen to come. Remembered combining lunch and dinner together and we had our first proper meal at Nanjing Dong Lu. Went to a shanghainese restaurant but the food totally cannot make it! Only the xiao long bao was alright. The fried rice that I ordered was very oily and salty. We were kind of disappointed with the first meal we had. Went on to shop around the vicinity and the guys brought themselves scarf and jacket while we girls just window-shopped. Had a try of shaved ice cream (like the ones sold in Can 2) in the chilly weather.

We went to metro(their equivalent of NTUC) again but this time with sufficient shopping bags. And the magnum ice cream here is duper cheap. RMB 9.99 for 5 sticks in a pack. That is like $0.50 per stick! OMG cheaper than SG! My housemate Sam was really going gaga over it and I ended up sharing a box with him. It’s really a good bargain!

Well, that’s for day 2.

Some pictures of the place we stay in..

long outdated post~ 13/1/10 Arrival in Shanghai...

Onboard the China Eastern plane:

My first time taking a night flight and it was so cool to be able to star gaze from the window. It’s like a universe out there! Totally STAR-STRUCKED! Luckily, Huiyi and I got a window seat and we need not suffer the inconvenience of those cramped middle seats. Had our breakfast 15 minutes after we boarded the plane. It was my first time having breakfast at 1:15am! The food was alright but their serving was big… Eggs, sausages, fruits, bread, yogurt all at one go. We were quite stunned by how fast the other passengers (whom I shall not name) gobbled down their food.

Arrival in Shanghai:

Reached the airport at around 6am. The moment we alighted from the plane we were trembling like hell. From Singapore 28 degree Celsius to -4 degree Celsius, we braved through the custom and arrival hall before changing into our winter clothing. Well, the day of arrival was spent aimlessly waiting at the GIP office for the rest of the GIP participants who had their flights delayed. From 9am we waited till 1pm before the agent sent us to our apartments.

For my group, we were the most unlucky ones. Initially we approached the 1st housing agent recommended by NTU yet they took a very long time to respond to our emails and only replied after we sent a series of emails. Despite us rushing them for more choices of housing, they had failed to reply us and had left us hanging there. Even till now, we received no acknowledgements from them that they are unable to find us an accommodation. Should we continue to wait for their reply, we would have not been able to secure housing by now.

Hence, we turned to the other agent JS Bridges at the very last minute. Although eventually we did get an accommodation, it was not one of the better choices. On the Friday before our arrival in Shanghai, the agent did confirm with us an accommodation in Zhong Shan Gong Yu. However, it was after the confirmation that they backed out and told us that the landlord was not agreeable to renting it to us for half a year. The trust that we had in their professionalism had been thwarted as a result. But we were still glad they brought us around to seek out the housing they had on hand on the day of our arrival. In the end after viewing a total of 6 apartments in Wang Bang area, we managed to settle for a 3 room apartment with a common toilet at RMB 4800 per month. Although the location is way off our work place(requires a train ride of half an hour), the rent is really much cheaper than the RMB 6500 that we initially need to pay for the counterpart in Zhong Shan Gong Yu. This is a plus point. Furthermore, there’s around 5-6 households of NTU GIP students living in the wan bang area too so this makes future gatherings more accessible. What a blessing in disguise. =)

After settling down in the apartment, we were so busy unpacking, cleaning up and getting the internet connection done that we only had MAC for dinner at 10pm. All of us were deadbeat.
Right after dinner, we headed to the nearby super market (Metro) to get our basic necessities like pillow, bed sheets etc. The worst thing was that they didn’t provide any plastic bags for us to put our items when we have 2 trolleys full of items and we couldn’t push them back home. GG! We were left with no choice but to grab every item and walked for a journey of 10 minutes back home in the frigging cold weather. Despite wearing gloves, our fingers were so numb from carrying so many items that it seemed like they were going to drop off anytime. =X

It was tougher than the Ultimate Challenge because of the extreme coldness that barred us from progressing further. However, with sheer perseverance, we finally made it home! The string of unlucky events had not come to a standstill yet. To worsen our day, the heater in the living room wasn’t working. Instead of hot air, it was generating cold air and that affected our state of well-being. It was a struggle to bath as the bathroom heater could turn cold anytime. The whole episode lasted till 3am and we did not have a good sleep at all due to our inability to adapt to the cold temperature. Huiyi and I were shivering all the way to sleep till the following morning.

What an unforgettable 1st day I had on my adventure! =X

long outdated posT~ farewell SG, hello Shanghai! (Part 1) 13/1/10

This marked the beginnning of my adventure to AT land: Shanghai!I had been very busy days prior to the departure. Many last minute meetups with my beloved friends whom I will be MIA-ing from their lives for half a year. The feelings of unwillingness to leave drew nearer as the day drew nearer. This is the journey which I've set my mind on for the past year so any thoughts of regrets dissipate before emotions got the better of me.

I was really glad to have quite a number of friends and relativesto send me off despite the 1am flight. Some have work and school early the following morning and a few( weiting and peishi) even lived at the other end of Singapore. Your presences were much appreciated! Not forgetting friends who couldn't make it yet send in their wishes, I really felt loved!

Was there at the airport quite early around 8 pm to have dinner with my sec school peeps( SHY+JJ+JL+Wendy+Jasmine) plus Hui Mun and Ming Li at XIn Wang Cafe. Our last dinner before I leave! Had a pre-b'day celebration for Shuz too!

TO Shuz:
So sorry that I couldn't celebrate with ya this year...! Nvm, lets go for a gd dinner to mark our 10th anniversary of frenship with the rest when i'M back !^^

TO wendy and Jasmine:
It's great to cya gals after 1 year! Tks for coming despite having sch and work the next day... haha I realised we meet every year to celebrate SHuz's b'day...

TO huiying, yiwen, JJ, JL, Hui MUn and mINg li:
Though it was jus a simple dinner, I really *hearts* you all for coming! More pig-out sessions and HTHTs (heart to heart talks) when I'm back! Hopefully, you all gt new stories/statuses to update me!=P

In between dinner went to meet up with TKD peeps who specially came just to have a last talk before I fly.

To chengyi, wenxiang, yiming:
Tks for coming despite being sick(YM), so tired after work(wx) and school( CY). haha it's always fun to be with you peeps! Had a great time laughing at the comical acts that u peeps were up to! (esp CY and his lame jokes!) Although our HK trip may not realise this JUlt due to uncertainties in everyone's schedule, we can still [plan for a mini weekend getaway to perhaps THailand? Hopefully we can work things out.

TO nu-er(weiting) and tua-ji(peishi):
Tks for training all the way to the far EAST of SG...haha really appreciated ur effort in writing the cards. *touched*leTS pUB when we are back k! haha we've been procrastinating on this since last year?

Not forgetting chee yun and lai bun as well as my friends and relatives who were there for me too.. manY thanks for coming!(once again ><)

long daY no. 2...

7/01/10 yet another long and hectic day for me...

Woke up duper early in the morning to settle some adminstrative stuff for GIP trip. Headed all the way to NTU just for the monetary gain which I'm more than willing to sacrifice for. =x

Thereafter, went to visit my ex-colleagues at SMS Infocomm during lunch hour and satisfied my craving for Maggie's lunch specialities! It's really heartwarming to have home-cooked lunch that is pipping hot under the luxury of air-con. It beats walking out to the crowded coffee shops under the sweltering mid day sun.

Mei jiao, Amelia, Maggie, Ana and I! The lunch kakis~

The long walk in that helped to offset the guilt built from snacking too much during work.

Although the company that I worked for last vacation wasn't as renowned as other companies that I've worked for, my colleagues @ SMS Infocomm were really unpretentious and this was the first time that I see no office politics among the staff. Although most of my colleagues were Malaysians, they were very amiable and caring towards a temp like me. Really greatful to have met such NICE colleagues! It'll be another 6 months before I join them for lunch again...=)
Rushed to the bank to telegraphic transfer the downpayment for housing agent before picking Mum up from the clinic after her surgery. How unlucky I was to be told that DBS offer no such service at the branch nearer my house... wasted trip. In the end , I had no choice but to head to Bedok central branch and travelled to Tampines again... So tiring... Seemed like I'm the most loyal SMRT passenger of the day. lol.

My last stop was to head to Shuz's house after dinner to scan the required documents for the housing agent. Luckily, she had a scanner or else I'll have to travel further just to scan the doc. TKs gal for being so ever ready to help whenever I need you!=)

eND of loNG day 2...

it'S 3 more daYS to shanghAi! *excited*

a lONg day...

6/01/10 morning: kayaking at Bedok Reservoir with Jun Long

It's been a long time since i've kayaked. The last time I did was when during my 1-star course? haha really damn long... finally put what I've learnt to use after so long. Kayaking at bedok reservoir is 100 times cleaner than at kallang where the water is really disgusting...to think that I actually gulped down some water from kallang river when I was learning my capsize drill... *eeeks!*

6/01/10 afternoon: MJ with huiyi, Junjie and Jun Long

Had some lady luck with me when MJ-ing but sadly, we didn't play real $. Nonetheless, still enjoyed MJ-ing my whole afternoon away. haha good workout for the mind.

6/01/10 evening: dinner+ wii with Loo Wee and Yiming

The last time we met was half a year ago and the next time will be half a year later! We shall make it a point to meet once every six months... Although the wii was disappointing, I had a great time catching up with them! Come next year will be our time to graduate and join him in the workforce... can't believe that we are entering a new phase real soon! ><

My 2010 resolutions

Don't follow your dreams; chase them.

I believe 2010 will be a very exciting year ahead for me considering that I'll be in away in Shanghai for at least half a year and won't be in town till July...

Nonetheless, some new year resolutions to kick start 2010:
- Continue to create many great memories with family and friends
- Learn how to express my love for the ones I care

- Tour other parts of China during my GIP exchange

- Stay healthy ( continue my exercise regime of jogging, swimming, badminton etc even when I"m overseas... i dun wanna come back looking like a 肉粽)

- Make many new friends @ work and sch ( inclusive of ATs and other nationalities) and establish my own global contacts...

- Give my 200% in work, studies and FYP (when I'm back)

-
Be independent: in terms of taking care of myself and the peeps ard me.
- Be open-minded and accept people and their differences. Don't criticise and make judgements unnecessarily without proper understanding.

- Be financially independent.

- Learn how to cook

- Continue to volunteer at Tampines SHG in the second half of the year.

- Travel with sec besties to HK after my China tour

Most importantly, stay happy everyday amidst life's greatest challenges. 做个幸福小女人!Treasure every moment in life and not look back on things that have happened. Instead, try to make the next moment better and worth looking back on when old. One life, live it to the fullest!
=)

Goodbye 2009, heLLO 2010!

31/12/09-1/1/10: Spent the last day of 2009 and first day of 2010 in NTU with Yiming, wenxiang, chengyi, sky and darwin! =)
(too bad shuz, hy, seb and zs can't join us...)

We had our long awaited steamboat. It was a very full meal for us on the last day of 2009. $100 worth of steamboat ingredients coupled with durian and bailey(courtesy of sky)... luckily, no food poisoning incident for us =X and the shabu shabu sauce recommended by chengyi is really superb!

Ton at wx's room after steamboat and countdown. MJ-ed all the way from 1am to 5 plus in the morning... And i finally learnt how to play $ and count the tais after MJ101 Tutorial with Sky, Darwin and Yiming. Well, ended up paying some tuition fees haha but it's after all a learning process! Thereafter, we played some games like monopoly deal, saboteur. How lucky I was to keep getting the role of saboteur 4 in a row! maybe i should buy 4D since lady luck is with me... lol! Went for breakfast and we were in the eyes-going-to-close-anytime-kind- of -stage after a night of sleepless fun! really had an enjoyable time ushering the new year with u peeps!
